This Is Us – First Haircuts, Family Documentary Photographer Philadelphia PA

Last month I followed my family around for a day while we were happily snowed in togetherThis month, it was time for a big “first”.

There are so many firsts in your kids’ lives that you have no control over, so a year ago when my daughter, Aliza, saw some of her friends getting haircuts and asked for one I said sure… someday. To be fair, my little girl was born practically bald, and didn’t really get much hair to speak of until she was about two. Even then, it was straight, and then one day about six months later it suddenly curled up, and I thought “yes, now I don’t have to get it cut!” Her brother, Tobin, on the other hand, was born with what we affectionately referred to as a curl-hawk and it just kept getting better from there. You can see in this post I did a few months back, he is blessed with a luscious head of hair and I was in no rush to chop it off. I mean, he didn’t really seem to mind that it was always in his eyes, or that I was constantly playing with it to get it out of his face. And some days it was a little more curly, and other days it was… well, in his nose =P

We went to Modify Salon, and all got our cuts with Kat. Now, I’ll warn you, when she asked me what I wanted my answer was “for you to cut off as little as possible”, so it’s not a dramatic change, just enough for a first time.

To my surprise, he was happy to sit in the chair himself, with clementine and string cheese in hand of course. Since we weren’t sure for how long he’d sit still, he just got a quick brush out and she went to work. And aside from a little squirming and making a few funny faces, he did great.

And ridiculously cute as ever.

For the first couple minutes in the chair, she had this deer in headlights look on her face and I couldn’t quite tell if she was upset or just really focusing. Thankfully it turned out to be the latter.

She was just too busy taking it all in. Oh, and the doll she brought with her is a classic Cabbage Patch baby that was mine a million years ago. She calls him “Baby Spice”; I have no idea why, but I think he and “Baby Pizza” should meet 😉

I spent so much of my life with hairdressers wanting to straighten or blow out my hair (let’s not even discuss the years of horrible bangs), but at least I know now to take my curly top kids to see folks who know what to do with it.

I mean, could you ask for more? And just look at my gorgeous girl…
toddler girlPINIMAGElittle toddler girl looks cute in the salon after her first haircut family documentary photography philadelphia paPINIMAGESo, first haircuts were a success! I briefly considered trying to cut it myself, but it was actually a lot of fun to make a big deal about it. I only teared up a little, and just when my mom put snippets of their little curls in my hand for me to take home for the scrapbook.

Leave a comment and tell me about your kids’ first haircuts! How long did you wait to pull the scissors? Or tell me about a horrible childhood haircut experience you hope to spare your children 😉
