South Philly Newborn Session

Do you live in a classic, Philadelphia row home and think your house is too dark for a photo session? Think again! A big majority of my sessions are in these long, narrow houses that are not typically known for being big, bright spaces. AND I LOVE IT!

First of all, there’s a lot more light in your house than you might realize, and my crazy photographer-eyes will find the light wherever it’s hiding.

Second, whether it be maternity, newborn, whatever, making photos for your family at home is my absolute favorite. Only at home can everyone truly relax, feel comfortable, and let your true personalities come out. Plus then we don’t have to worry about the weather, bonus!

We of course got to know this cute couple for their maternity session, and I was so excited to come back and meet their cute little chunk of a baby 😍 When I got there, Martha was breastfeeding, and I always insist parents not interrupt what baby needs for me. So we hung out while he finished brunch, enjoying the gentle light in the living room with all of their plants and cute decor.

I remembered loving their kitchen last time, and it was again one my favorite spots. They had a cute “welcome home” sign, which just made it even better. You may have also noticed that dad is pretty tall, and you can scroll all the way down to see a behind the scenes shot of how I got those over the shoulder shots (though the one through the “O” is just me being really stretchy and good at shooting way over my head)😆

Then it was time to head upstairs, which is also another favorite moment to catch if I’m fast enough! The puppy leading the way made this one an all-time favorite “going up the stairs” shot.

Upstairs we had two rooms to work in, and they were the perfect example of the types of light I find in Philly homes. The front bedroom had gorgeous window light, and Mom especially wanted to have moment in front of the windows with her newborn, where she had been holding her pup for the maternity photos.

Then we hung out in baby’s nursery for a bit. It was a much darker room, with just one north-facing window, but it made for some of our mutually favorite images. The moody light while baby was nursing, and craned back to get a kiss from dad, ugh 😍

So, all that to say, I loved working with this sweet family in their amazing home. So much that I nominated them for a feature in Philly Family Magazine

Hopefully you feel a little better about maybe having a session in your home; just reach out and we can chat about it!

And, as promised, the BTS shot of my climbing on their kitchen counter 😂
