MENTORING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Open-book Mentoring

Photographers, do you feel stuck or in need of a boost? Are you just thinking about starting a photography business or specializing in a new genre? Are you realizing that running a business and being a photographer take wildly different skill sets?

You’re in the right place!

I have been running my one-woman show, specializing in lifestyle and documentary photography and videography for families and births in Philadelphia, since 2011 (ask me my origin story some time, it’s a good one πŸ˜‰)

I've been called a β€˜photo ninja’ for catching beautiful moments my clients didn't even realize I was taking, know all about how to survive and thrive as a birth worker (while raising 3 kids), and I can guide you through what can seem like a lonely and confusing world of turning your art into a business. I have helped photographers who were just getting started, and folks who had already been in business for over a decade. I’m not going to read your horoscope, but I will give you a loving kick in the pants to help you over whatever hurdles are stressing you out.

β€œRachel saved my photography career to survive the pandemic. I’m not even exaggerating. I’ve had many courses, workshops, and anything to improve my photography techniques for years, but Rachel helped me grow my mindset as a photographer. I didn’t even know that was exactly what I needed! She helped me navigate my price change anxiety and reminded me why I’m doing this. Her advice is always with love. I can comfortably tell her anything on my mind. I am still working as a photographer thanks to Rachel, you will be glad to have her as your mentor!”

What is open-book mentoring?

Glad you asked!

I call these β€œopen-book” sessions because we can cover almost anything you’re feeling stuck on or curious about, like…

β€œHey, I’m just getting started as a photographer and I have so many questions… ”

  • setting up a biz, picking out and learning your gear, basic editing

  • portfolio building (and how to not get stuck in portfolio building)

  • finding a confident voice as a business-owner

  • providing in-person or virtual review sessions to help clients get the most out of their photos

Or maybe β€œI’d really like to start in birth photography, but I need help with…”

  • getting started in the birth world

  • things to know before entering a birth space

  • how things change depending on hospital vs birth center vs home

  • handling challenging shooting environments, lighting, gear, and settings

  • being on call, and recovering after; knowing your limit and setting up support

  • pricing and educating clients on value, supporting other birth workers/photographers

  • editing tricky shots, general editing tips and tricks

  • difficult birth outcomes and processing the experience after

Running your own photography business or trying a new specialty can feel scary and overwhelming, and having someone who has been through it all to help guide you is such a gift (I know it has been for me!)

β€œI talk to Rachel whenever I need a boost. It's so therapeutic to talk to someone in my field about those nagging things that ding my confidence or have me stuck. She's an amazing cheerleader, the perfect coach in my corner, and I feel so comfortable telling her about my hits and my misses. She gives advice without judgment, and a kick in the pants when we both know I need it. I wish I'd had Rachel to talk to when I was just starting out; those first 10 years would have felt far less alone. I'm so glad I can talk to her now!”
